Split personality

December 2, 2008 at 1:09 pm (Beaded, Beyonce, Brooch, Lace) (, , , , , , )

Is Beyonce suffering from a split personality?

One day she is Sasha Fierce in a robo-glove, and the next day she is Miss South Carolina in the mother of all beauty pageant dresses by Zuhair Murad. With pageant hair to match. And why do her bosoms look like they have been encased and shellacked in a Glad trash bag?

Eternal question

November 13, 2008 at 5:48 pm (All White, Beaded, Draped, Fergie, Sequins, Tights) (, , , , , , )

Sure, “is so-and-so pregnant?” is the eternal Hollywood question. The minute someone sports a little paunch in their size -2 frame, everyone things they’re preggers.

But seriously…is Fergie pregnant? Look at these recent photos. Her washboard abs seem less washboardy, and the girls are absolutely enormous.

Vogue

November 11, 2008 at 3:32 pm (All Black, Anna Wintour, Beaded, Boots, Necklace) (, , , , , , )

So maybe it’s a bad idea to question the fashion judgement of Anna Wintour. Who am I anyways? But I really don’t like this Prada dress. I’ll throw caution to the wind becuase the dress ain’t pretty. It. Just. Isn’t. Pretty. It’s drab and depressing and it kinda looks like her shoulders are molding.

She also looks like the icon for the ladies restroom.

Paintball

November 11, 2008 at 1:06 pm (America Ferrera, Beaded, Belt) (, , , , , , )

Did America Ferrera stop on her way to play a little paintball? Or was she attached by swarming hornets?

I love the silhouette of this Oscar de la Renta dress, but the pattern with the beads pushes it over the top.

Fore!

November 10, 2008 at 3:12 pm (Beaded, Feathers, Headband, Mischa Barton) (, , , , , , )

I normally love the flounce, frill and sheer romance of Marchesa, but Mischa Barton’s dress is a tad ridiculous.

Perhaps it would better in a different color, but this green just makes me think of golf, croquet, or any other uppity lawn sport. I mean, seriously. Is the skirt made out of dill?

Weddings or coronations

October 23, 2008 at 3:31 pm (Beaded, Deep V, Elizabeth Banks, Halter, Sheer, Train) (, , , , , , )

I really like the front of Elizabeth Banks’ Kaufman Franco dress for the London premiere of W. It photographed beautifully.

Until I saw this photo. This length of train is only appropriate at a wedding or a coronation. Otherwise, it is unnecessary and excessive. The dress would be just as pretty without the train, or with a reasonably sized one.

Art deco

October 22, 2008 at 1:50 pm (Beaded, Kelly Lynch, Metallic, Sequins, Tunic) (, , , , , , )

There is a reason that Art Deco was more for buildings than for clothes. Unless you *want* to look like the Chrysler building, I advise you stay away from Kelly Lynch’s dress.

And why is the dress so schlumpy? Unless she wanted it to match her schlumpy hair.

Wearable art

October 22, 2008 at 9:11 am (Asymmetrical, Beaded, Brooch, Clutch, Katie Lee Joel, Metallic, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sequins, Shiny, Tights) (, , , , , , , , )

I get that the Mobile Art Chanel Contemporary Art Container opening is about fashion as art, and not necessarily about what’s wearable or salable. So, if there is a time to go conceptual, forward, quirky, this is it.

Nevertheless, Sarah Jessica Parker looks like a Chanel bag lady and Katie Lee Joel looks like Flapper Pocahontas.

Rockette

October 21, 2008 at 11:06 am (Beaded, Clutch, Elizabeth Banks, Sequins) (, , , , , , )

Elizabeth Banks chose a very tinsel-y, bead-y, glitter-y Rockette Dolce and Gabbana minidress for the premiere of Zach and Miri Make a Porno (which I have absolutely zero desire to see).

I’m not crazy about the dress, but am even less crazy about the fact that she looks twice her age in it. The Jackie O hairdo, the matchy-matchy prom shoes and purse, and the staid accessories mature her way to much.

She channeled way too much Laura Bush and not enough Miri.

Slip up

October 14, 2008 at 11:26 am (Asymmetrical, Beaded, Clutch, Draped, Rachel Weisz, Shiny) (, , , , , , , )

Normally I love Rachel Weisz. She always looks classic and elegant, but with a little sultry twist.

I was a bit disappointed in this Narciso Rodriguez dress. I don’t hate it, but the top seems incongruous withe the bottom.

The top says LBD with the tight beaded bodice and a slight bondage/choking vibe. Then the bottom has a wispy ethereal quality that doesn’t make sense with the top.

Finally, the wisp of slip at her thigh just makes me think of my grandmother saying, “Do you think she knows her slip is showing?”
