Michelle Obama followed Jackie-O’s fashion footsteps across the pond. Has she been a little more casual than I would suggest? Perhaps. But she’s also been looking fresh and classy and fabulous.

Today’s outfit I just don’t get. First and foremost, it does not match. And I think it was intended to match. The shoe, dress and cardigan colors are all off, and not it a quirky “this doesn’t match but it goes together” way, but in a “she really wants these to all the the same color but they aren’t.”

And what is the deal with the sweater? Besides being off-buttoned (is that on purpose?) and manically argyled (the left sleeve, which you can’t see here, is also argyle), it just isn’t appealing.

While I love that she is rewearing the inaguration Jimmy Choo shoes, I didn’t think the green color worked on inaguration day and I don’t think they work today.

Hostess gift

January 20, 2009 at 10:06 am (Michelle Obama) (, , , , , , , )

What a classy lady Michelle Obama is! She comes to the White House with a hostess gift for Laura Bush. Wow.

I  am not as sure about this dress. After all the hullabaloo around “What will she wear?”  this dress doesn’t grab me. Now, I’ve only seen a picture or two. But it feels a little blingy. The color is a bit drab. And the pattern looks like Grandma’s curtains.

But I’ll keep looking for pics and maybe will see it in a different light. Can’t wait for tonight’s ball gowns! Oh yeah, and I’m pretty excited about the swearing in part too….

First lady

I’m thrilled and excited that a) the political ads will finally end and b) that Obama was elected.

I’m less than thrilled with Michelle Obama’s Narciso Rodriguez dress. I loved that the new first family was all coordinated. But I just didn’t like how the dress cut her up. It was black at the neckline, red at the bust, black at the waist/cummerbund and sides, red at the thighs, and black again at the hem. That’s a lot going on.

I demand a recount

August 26, 2008 at 2:00 pm (Brooch, Michelle Obama) (, , , , , )

I really like Michelle Obama. And I think her speech at last night’s Democratic National Convention was great. But her choice of this Maria Pinto dress demands a recount.

First off– the color. The turquoise color didn’t look good against the bright blue backdrop, and she looked like a turquoise version of Grimace.

Second–the cut. Her bra strap showed on occasion, and the expanse of unfettered material was uber-boring. No defined waistline, no seaming, nothing to add interest. It looks like it was sewed from a Simplicity “It’s So Easy” clothing pattern. The length was a tad too long. I get that she needed to be demure with her knees covered, but it could have still been two inches shorter. And, while she is by no means big, the cut of this dress did nothing for her hips or her backside.

Finally–the pin. What’s up with that Erickson Beamon brooch? Maybe she was trying to create focal point for the close-up shots. Is it a sunburst? A daisy? A subliminal symbol of hope, future progress and prosperity all wrapped into one metal-and-stone accessory?
